Harbor City officially opened its new waterfront cycle path on Saturday morning, completing a 40 km loop that links the old port district with the northern beaches. The project, first proposed in 2022, took three years to build and was delivered two months ahead of schedule.

City officials said the path is separated from road traffic along its entire length, with lighting every 30 meters and twelve rest stops that include water fountains and bike repair stands. Early counts recorded more than 8,000 riders on the opening weekend alone.

Local businesses along the route have welcomed the change. Several cafes near the ferry terminal reported their busiest weekend of the year, and two bike rental shops said they had sold out of daily passes by noon on Sunday.

Transport planners expect the path to take pressure off the coastal road during rush hour. A survey carried out before construction found that one in five commuters would consider cycling to work if a safe, direct route existed.

Residents who live near the northern end of the loop raised concerns during consultation about parking and noise. The city responded by adding two new parking areas and limiting construction hours, and says it will review both measures after six months of use.

The next phase, which will connect the loop to the central train station, is due to begin early next year.
